Portrait<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a Professor of Cultural and Social Anthropology. For many years, my research has focused on various dimensions of mobility and migration, with particular attention to societies in the transatlantic region\u2014especially the Caribbean, the Upper Guinea Coast (Cape Verde), and Brazil. I studied in M\u00fcnster and Marburg and received my PhD in Marburg with a dissertation on the spiritual practices and affiliations of Haitian migrants in Montreal, Canada. I completed my postdoctoral phase in Freiburg (Breisgau), where I obtained my habilitation with a study on transnational Cape Verdean family relationships. This work centered on the extent to which normative expectations of family-based migration influence the formation, maintenance, or dissolution of these family constellations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My most recent research project, conducted in the Brazilian metropolis of S\u00e3o Paulo, investigates how newly arrived migrants perceive the city\u2019s landscape of assistance, the kinds of social relationships they form within it, the types of support accessible to them in humanitarian and pro-migrant contact zones, and how these experiences shape their individual subject positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
