Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
Ability to read and understand academic literature in English. Willingness to attend lessons, read texts beforehand, and engage in discussions and presentations.The seminar is open for advanced BA and MA students. While some familiarity with basic concepts of gender and sexuality is appreciated, it is not a necessary requirement. The purpose of this seminar is to develop theoretical and methodological tools that can be used by students for their own research.
Inhalt
Gender and sexuality have been topics of utmost importance in anthropology. Queer studies in the house of anthropology to borrow from Boellstroff (2007) has been a rather recent entry. Queer has been a politically debated term initially. However, more recently the term queer is being embraced in different ways. It does not only serve the purpose of identification but it also encapsulates the politics, subjectivities and practices of people. Queer or queerness hence; emerges both as ways of being identified and ways of living lives. It urges us to question the hegemonic ways of being which have been normalized. When we bring queer and/in anthropology together, it not only urges us to understand the lives of non normative genders but also provides us with a way of understanding, relating and theorizing the world through a queer lens. It demands us to critically reflect on various concept-categories and probably reassess them through a different orientation. A turn towards understanding and relating through queer lens also tells us to not only look at questions of gender and sexuality critically but also the questions of race, class and caste. This seminar will therefore unpack the following questions:1. How non-normative genders and sexualities have featured in anthropology?
2. How queerness opens ways to imagine the discipline of anthropology itself?
3. What does it mean to queer anthropology?
The seminar will engage with themes like but not limited to kinship and intimacy; bodies, performatives and performance; ecologies; citizenship and belonging; and research methodologies. The seminar will move beyond any particular definition of queer and explore how queerness opens up ways to reflect on the discipline of anthropology from within and make other worlds possible.
