Teaching and Research Partnerships
The National University of Rwanda in Butare and the University of Mainz have cooperated closely since 1982. The Department of Anthropology and African Studies has a close cooperation with the Department of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Arts, Media and Social Sciences. Since 1984 we have been collaborating with the Department of Sociology and Social Administration and the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the University of Addis Abeba. In 1994 Ivo Strecker was appointed to oversee the establishment of the South Omo Research Centre in Southern Ethiopia. The department also works in conjunction with the Institut Nationale des Sciences Humaines (INSH), Université N'Djamena (Tschad) in carrying out research on the northern Nilo-Saharan languages as well as linguistic research in general.
We also maintain close contacts with anthropologists and sociologists at the Université Nationale de Bénin (UNB) in Cotonou (Benin), with whom researchers from our own department are collaborating on a number of research projects. Many of these joint research projects also involve students from Benin.
In 1999 the Department of Anthropology and African Studies and the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), South Africa entered into a cooperative agreement that facilitates the exchange of students and staff as well as the planning and execution of joint research projects.
