    Volumes I (1994) - IX (2002)

The first issue of Swahili Forum appeared in 1994 as an annual issue of the print quarterly Afrikanistische Arbeitspapiere (AAP) based at the Institut für Afrikanistik, University of Cologne, Germany. The editors were Rose Marie Beck, Thomas Geider and Werner Graebner. As they wrote in their editorial, Swahili Forum was meant to continue the tradition of the newsletter Swahili Language and Society/Notes and News, which had been published between 1984 and 1992 by the Institut für Afrikawissenschaften, University of Vienna, Austria. At the same time, Swahili Forum intended to provide a broad platform for academic works from all disciplines with a focus on Swahili. For the number VI (1997), the editors were joined by Ingo Heine, and from number VII (2000) on, Lutz Diegner became an editor. The last printed volume of Swahili Forum (No. IX) appeared in 2002. This was also the last number of AAP, which from the year 2003 on continued as APAL – Annual Publication in African Linguistics. In the same year of 2003, Swahili Forum started to be published as an online journal based at the Institut für Ethnologie und Afrikastudien, University of Mainz, Germany.
As a service to the readers of Swahili Forum the print issues (SWAHILI FORUM I - IX) are online accessible since 2008. This has been made possible with financial support from the sub-department "African Languages and Linguistics", Institut für Ethnologie und Afrikastudien, University of Mainz.
